Paulownia: The Fast-growing Tree with Sustainable Benefits

Paulownia, a real all-rounder!

Paulownia ist the choice of wood that is used for the boards. It comes exclusively from Austrian plantations. Paulownia, also known as the bluebell or kiri tree, is an Asian, very fast-growing tree. One of the advantages of Paulownia is that this tree is being harvested. That means that the tree will regrow from its stump up to seven times.

Paulownia wood weighs only 1/3 of the weight of oak. This is because paulownia traps a lot of air during growth. Their honeycomb cell structure makes them very stable. That’s why Paulownia got the nickname “aluminium among the woods”. The soft wood can be shaped relatively easy and is therefore very popular for surfboards and skis. Paulownia is also a very popular wood for the interior of caravans or boats. But it is also becoming increasingly popular for furniture construction. That’s because paulownia doesn’t cup or warp, even in environments with high humidity swings. For this reason, house cladding can also be realized without any problems.

Paulownia is insensitive to the effects of seawater which makes the wood the ideal material for boards of all kinds. This quality makes it possible to avoid the use of varnish. Linseed oil is sufficient to beautify the grain and ensure absolute watertightness.

Paulownia also cuts a fine figure as a climate protector, as it binds a lot of CO 2 and fewer trucks are needed to transport the same amount of wood.
